Most Common Problems for the Dishwasher.

1. If your dishes aren’t getting as clean as they used to, or there’s a funny smell coming from inside.

It could be that you need to do some regular Maintenance: Click Here —> Learn Haw Properly Clean your Dishwasher. and Learn —> How To Properly Load and Recommendations of What to Avoid Washing in the Dishwasher

1a.) First, make sure the water temperature is correct.

Most manufacturers recommend the water to be around 120 degrees Fahrenheit to clean properly, you can also run the hot water in the sink until it comes out hot, to clear out the cold water and the lines.

1b.) Before you run the dishwasher, it’s important for the spray arms to be clear of dirt and soap residue

Clogged spray arms can prevent the water from spraying out as intended, causing your dishes to remain dirty after a cycle, simply take a small nail or toothpick and check all the holes on the spray arm, if any are clogged make sure to clean them out, be sure not to use anything that will deform the holes.

1c.) It’s important to inspect and clean your dishwasher’s filter as well.

A clogged filter will prevent the water from cycling through the dishwasher properly, and can prevent the dishes from getting clean, make sure to clean off any residue on the interior walls and gaskets, also make sure to use a cleaner such as a fresh or glisten on a regular basis to help keep everything clean, keeping everything clean will allow the water to flow properly and clean the dishes better it will also reduce stress on the motors and pumps since they won’t have to work as hard.

2. Top 5 reasons why your dishwasher won’t drain!

Before we begin we’re going to make sure the appliance is unplugged or the circuit breakers are off, so there’s no chance of electrocution, also make sure you turn off the water supply underneath the sink.

2a.) First thing to check is the drain pump.

dishwasher drain pump
dishwasher drain pump

The it pumps the waste water out of the dishwasher, the drain pump is usually made up of a small electric motor and a pump body with a drain impeller inside, the drain pump is located at the bottom of the dishwasher, if the dishwasher will not drain, it could be that the motor has failed, or something might be stuck in the pump body, you can inspect the pump body, to see if it’s something you can clean out , or if the impeller is damaged, a lot of dishwashers have a check valve as part of the drain pump, so make sure to inspect that as well to make sure it’s in good condition, some are only sold with the drain pump, but some are sold separately depending on the dishwasher’s design, if the impeller is damaged or you can’t replace the check valve separately, then you’ll have to replace the whole pump, if everything checks out physically , we’ll have to test the motor, in order to see if the parking carrying electric current, we have to test it with a multimeter set to continuity, once you have it set touch the probes together to make sure it’s working, once you have access to the drain pump you’ll have to remove the wires, then touch a probe to each terminal, you should have continuity, if you don’t get a reading then it’s bad and you’ll have to replace the pump, if you need to order a part, simply go to Amre Supply or Reliable Parts and type in your model number find your part on the easy to read diagrams and match it to the number below. Check The Video – > Haw to Replace Drain Pump

2b.) Now we’re going to check the pump seal and impeller kit.

Dishwasher pump seal and impeller kit
Dishwasher pump seal and impeller kit

This kit seals the pump body where the motor shaft goes through it and pumps the water, the impeller is the part of the pump that actually pumps the water, depending on how the manufacturer sells it may also contain the seals screens or motor whichever style yours has make sure you change out the whole kit so everything is new, the impeller is located inside the dishwasher at the bottom of the sump some dishwashers don’t have a separate drain pump instead the main impeller works as the drain impeller during the drain cycle, if the dishwasher won’t drain, it could be that something has gotten into the sump, or the impeller itself is damaged , depending on your design, you may have to access it from inside the dishwasher or from underneath, in order to get to the impeller from the inside you’ll have to remove the lower rack, take off the spray arm and the screens, once you have access to it make sure to clean it out and inspect the impeller, from underneath you’ll have to take the motor off the sump to get access to the impeller, once you have access you can inspect the area for anything that shouldn’t be ther and clean it out , then inspect the impeller for damage and replace if necessary.  If you need to order a part, simply go to Amre Supply or Reliable Parts and type in your model number find your part on the easy to read diagrams and match it to the number below

2c.) Now we can look at the check valve.

Dishwasher check valve
Dishwasher check valve

It prevents waste water from coming back into the dishwasher, check valves have been used for many years they’re, usually round and made out of rubber, depending on the dishwasher’s design, the check valve could be on the drain pump under the dishwasher or inside the sump,, if the dishwasher won’t drain, it could be that the check valve has failed when the valve fails waste water can flow back into the dishwasher, so there will be water left in the bottom after the drain, cycle, depending upon your dishwasher you may have to access it from inside, or from underneath, in order to get to the check valve from inside you’ll have to remove the lower rack take off the spray arm and the screens, from underneath you’ll either have to take the drain hose off the drain pump or remove the pump from the sump to get access to the valve, once you have access you can inspect it and replace it if it’s damaged or missing keep in mind some check valves are only sold with the drain pump as a complete assembly, if you pull the check valve out to inspect it and it comes apart like it did here, make sure you remove the rest of it from inside the pump, before you change it out, if you need to order a part, simply go to Amre Supply or Reliable Parts and type in your model number find your part on the easy to read diagrams and match it to the number below. Check The Video – > Haw to Replace Check Valve

2d.) Next thing to check is the filters.

Dishwasher filters, many designs of filters.
Dishwasher filters, many designs of filters.

They filter the water as it circulates through the dishwasher, there are many designs of filters used in dishwashers from fine to the course they’re usually made out of plastic or metal the filters are usually located inside the dishwasher either mounted on the bottom or in the sump if your dishwasher won’t drain the filter may be clogged and reducing the water circulation so the dishwasher won’t drain, once you locate the filters you can clean them if they’re dirty but if they’re damaged in any way they’ll have to be replaced. If you need to order a part, simply go to Amre Supply or Reliable Parts and type in your model number find your part on the easy-to-read diagrams and match it to the number below. Check The Video – > Haw to Replace Clean a filter

2e.)  The Last thing to check is the drain hose.

Dishwasher drain hose
Dishwasher drain hose

It carries the waste water out of the dishwasher, drain hoses are usually made out of plastic, they have rubber ends where they attach to the drain pump in the air gap, the drain hose connects to the pump under the dishwasher and runs under the sink, if the dishwasher won’t drain, it could be that the hose is kinked or clogged, inspect the hose for any blockages and clear them, if the hose has been crushed, or kinked in a way that it can’t be straightened out, it’ll have to be replaced, although not specifically related to the drain hose if you recently installed a new garbage disposer and the dishwasher is not draining you may have forgotten to remove the knockout plug, there’s a plug inside this area that needs to be knocked out with a screwdriver and removed before installing.

3. Top 5 reasons why your dishwasher won’t start!

Before we begin we’re going to make sure the appliance is unplugged or the circuit breakers are off, so there’s no chance of electrocution, also make sure you turn off the water supply underneath the sink.

3a.) First thing we’re going to look at is the door switch.

Dishwasher door switch
Dishwasher door switch

It’s a safety device that won’t let the dishwasher start unless the doors close, door switches are small micro switches that have a button on one end and wire terminals on the other with a set of contacts inside, depending upon your dishwasher there may only be one but most models have two, some are sold in kits and some are sold separately, they’re usually mounted in the latch assembly which is located in the control panel, if your dishwasher won’t start it could be that the door switches have failed and the dishwasher thinks the door is open instead of closed in order to test them we’ll have to open up the console and access the latch, once you have access to the latch you’ll be able to tell if you can get to the wire terminals for testing, if you can’t get the wires off you may have to take the latch out, once you have access to them we’re going to test them for continuity, in order to see if the parking carrying electric current, we have to test it with a multimeter set to continuity, once you have it set, touch the probes together to make sure it’s working, touch a probe to each terminal, it should not have continuity, then press the button on the switch, when pressed, you should get a continuity reading, make sure you test both switches, if either are bad they’ll have to be replaced, if you need to order a part simply go Amre Supply and type in your model number, find your part on the easy to read diagrams. Check The Video – > Haw to Replace Door Switch

3b.)  Now we’re going to check the thermal fuse.

Dishwasher thermal fuse

It’s a safety device that prevents the electronics in the control panel from overheating, some brands use a thermal fuse in the control panel to protect the control boards, it’s a fuse that’s ready to go off at a certain temperature, if it senses a temperature higher than it’s rated for, it’ll blow and cut the power, it’s located inside the control panel usually mounted on or very close to the control board, if the dishwasher won’t start, it could be that the thermal fuse has failed and power is cut off at the control board in order to access the fuse you’ll have to open up the control panel and locate, it carefully removes the wires, and touch a probe terminal, it should have continuity, if it doesn’t, it’ll have to be replaced be careful when removing the wires and replacing them you don’t want to bend or twist them in a way that will loosen up the wire connectors, if they’re not tight on the fuse terminals, it could cause it to fail. If you need to order a part, simply go to Amre Supply or Reliable Parts and type in your model number find your part on the easy to read diagrams and match it to the number below. Check The Video – > Haw to Replace Thermal Fuse

3c.)  Next we’re going to check the door latch.

Dishwasher door latch
Dishwasher door latch

It’s what holds the dishwasher door closed, the door latch works with the door strike to hold the door closed, depending upon how it’s sold, it could be the latch itself or it may include the strike or door switches, it’s usually mounted in the control panel and works with the strike to hold the door closed, it’s unusual for the strike to go bad, but make sure it’s there and not loose or damaged if the dishwasher won’t start it could be that the door latch has failed, once you have the console open you’ll have to inspect the latch, if it’s damaged in any way that’s stopping it from latching properly or not allowing the door switches to be hit when the door is closed, it’ll have to be changed.if either are bad they’ll have to be replaced, if you need to order a part simply go Amre Supply and type in your model number, find your part on the easy to read diagrams. Check The Video – > Haw to Replace Door Switch.

Dishwasher on-off switch

It’s the switch you hit to power up the dishwasher, some brands use an on-off switch to power up the dishwasher, they usually have a plastic body, and wire terminals where the wires hook up, on-off switches are located inside the control panel right behind the on-off button, if the dishwasher won’t start, it could be that the on-off switch has failed in order to test the switch for continuity you’ll have to open up the control panel, once you locate the switch, you’ll have to remove the wires, and touch a probe to each terminal, when you first touch the terminals it should not have continuity, then press the switch as if you were starting the dishwasher, when pressed it should have continuity, if the switch fails the tests, it’ll have to be replaced. If you need to order a part simply go to Amre Supply and type in your model number, find your part on the easy-to-read diagrams. Check The Video – > Haw to Replace On-Off Switch.

3e.)  Next we’re going to inspect the touchpad.

Dishwasher touchpad
Dishwasher touchpad

What you use to select and start the cycles, the touchpad is what you actually press on to make the cycle selections , then it sends the information to the main control board ,there have been many designs over the years, they’re usually glued to and sold with the control panel, but some are sold separately, they’re usually located on the front or top of the control panel, if the dishwasher won’t start, it could be that the touchpad has failed the contacts inside the touchpad can go bad preventing it from communicating with the control board, because there are so many different styles of touch pads, we can’t show you how to test them all here, you’ll have to get the tech sheet for your model and run the diagnostic test, if the touchpad fails the test, you’ll have to be replaced, If you need to order a part simply go Amre Supply and type in your model number, find your part on the easy to read diagrams. Check The Video – > Haw to Replace touchpad.

3f.)  Last thing to check is the main control board.

Dishwasher Main Control Board

It sends power to the dishwasher components, the main control board is a computer board that collects data from all the sensors and switches of the dishwasher and controls the various functions, they’re usually mounted in the control panel, if the dishwasher won’t start ,it could be that the main control board has failed, there are many different designs of main control boards out there, so we can’t show you how to test them all here, you’ll have to grab your tech sheet and follow the steps to test the board in this example there’s no test to tell you if the board is good, but it gives you a list of things to check that will tell you if the board has failed, if it fails the test, you’ll have to be replaced. If you need to order a part simply go to Amre Supply and type in your model number, find your part on the easy-to-read diagrams. Check The Video – > Haw to Replace Control Board.

5. Dishwasher Not Drying Dishes!

Are your dishes being wet at the end of the cycle? This is a common issue with most dishwashers and it’s likely due to not adding enough rinse aid, rinse aid helps keep water droplets off your dishes and prevents streak spots from forming on your dishes during the cycle. Now believe it or not the main reason that your dishes could be still wet at the end of the cycle is that the water entering the dishwasher is simply not hot enough. And I know what you’re thinking you’re saying, hey my dishwasher has a heater in it. Just like what you see on your picture there with the arrow pointing to the heater. But those heaters are woefully inadequate for heating water. The best they can do is try to help maintain the water temperature. Let’s take a look at my particular situation and see how long it takes before I get 120-degree water. Now obviously we sped that up to save time, but you can clearly see that it took about 50 seconds for me to get 120-degree water at my sink. And that means that my dishwasher would be done filling before it ever sees hot water. Okay so water temperature might leave the dishes dirty, but how come they’re still wet at the end of the cycle? And the answer to that is, on most dishwashers, there is a very specific amount of time used in the drying cycle. That’s when the dishwasher stops washing and turns on the heater to try and dry the dishes. Well if the water temperature at that point is too low, then it won’t get the water on the dishes hot enough to turn into a vapor. You might even open up the dishwasher and go oh my it’s quite hot in here. Well, that’s true, but the water on the dishes did not have sufficient time and sufficient heat to go from a liquid to a gas long enough to disappear in your dishwasher. Okay assuming your dishwasher is functioning properly and your hot water heater is set for at least 120 degrees, the only thing that you can do as a homeowner to make sure that your dishes are dry at the end of the cycle. Is to purge the water line between the hot water heater and the kitchen sink.
