Hello everybody, this is John from John H. Appliance Repair.

For those who do not know me, I make a living by working on appliances. In this page, I’ll look at the top ten most common dryer problems.

Over the last two years, I’ve worked on a variety of dryers, including gas and electric models, new and old, laundry centres, stacked washer and dryers, and more.

For each call I went to, I briefly documented why I was there and what I did to resolve it. From all of those logs, I compiled a list of the top ten dryer problems, classified them, and recorded how many times I faced each one.

In total, I received 381 dryer calls reporting 51 distinct issues.

I’ll spend a little more time explaining the top ten problems and their causes. As for the remaining 41 issues, I’ll mention them quickly at the end of the page as worthy mentions. There are a lot of issues to address, so let’s get started.

If you need to order a part, simply go to Amre Supply or Reliable Parts and type in your model number. Find your part on the easy-to-read diagrams and match it to the number below.

The champion’s number 1 problem is a noisy dryer coming in with 40 calls

Dryer drum wheels
Dryer drum wheels

Sometimes, when I come out to the dryer, it makes some kind of rattling noise. Maybe it’s a coin noise – the baffles inside the dryer drum can sometimes catch coins, which bounce around as the drum spins and make a clunking noise. Other times, it could be a screeching or metal-on-metal grinding noise. There are a few things that could be causing a noisy dryer. For example, a rattling vent in the back could be the culprit if it’s not securely connected. Alternatively, the rollers may be starting to seize up and not spin properly. However, most of the time, the noise is caused by either the idler pulley or the tensioner pulley.

Here’s how it works: the motor spins, and a belt goes from the motor to the tensioner pulley and then around the drum. The purpose of the tensioner pulley is to put tension on the setup and cause the drum to spin. The belt rides on the tensioner pulley all the time, and eventually, it wears a groove into the little plastic pulley. If the belt is not evenly spread out on the surface or is stuck in a groove, it will start to screech. Sometimes this screech gets really loud and sounds like metal on metal, but it’s really just the plastic pulley making a lot of noise.

With noisy dryers, almost every time, you will have to take the dryer apart and visually verify where the problem is. However, if it’s a rattling vent, you can fix it without taking anything apart. For Whirlpool Dryers, there is even a maintenance kit specifically for noisy dryers. The kit comes with the idler pulley or the tension pulley assembly, a little bracket and spring, the belt, and all the rollers for the dryer. If you have a problem with a noisy dryer, replace all of that stuff in the kit, and the dryer will be good to go for another 10 years or so.

If your dryer is screeching like crazy, most likely, the problem is the idler pulley. However, if you’re going to replace that pulley, I would go ahead and replace the belt as well since they usually come as a pair. If you’re feeling confident, you can also replace the rollers. By the way, just so you know, there’s a video on how to replace pretty much every single dryer part on every single brand out on YouTube. So, regardless of what brand you have or which part you need to replace, there’s a good chance you will find a step-by-step instructional video on how to replace it. Check The Video – Haw to repair the noisy dryer. If you need to order a part, simply go to Amre SupplyReliable Parts.

Problem number 2 coming in with 30 calls is a blown thermal fuse.

Dryer Thermal Fuse
Dryer Thermal Fuse

The thermal fuse is usually a small, oval-shaped white disc made of plastic. It may come in different shapes and styles, but it mostly looks like a white disc or a small shape. If you want to see more about it, I have a video where I take apart my dryer and show you where it is and how to replace it.

The thermal fuse’s purpose is to prevent the dryer from overheating, and it acts like a safety switch that will shut the dryer off if it gets too hot. Almost every single blown thermal fuse call that I get is caused by bad airflow. If the vent pipe is blocked, the vent hood outside could get clogged, or if you forget to clean out your lint screen, it will slow down or completely restrict the airflow. If you neglect this for a long time, the thermal fuse will blow due to the lack of airflow, and the dryer will get hotter and hotter.

It’s important to note that when the thermal fuse blows, it’s usually a one-time blow fuse, meaning that you can’t reset it or anything. You have to take the dryer apart and replace that fuse before your dryer will work again. Check The Video – Haw to repair Thermal Fuse. If you need to order a part, simply go to Amre SupplyReliable Parts.

Problem number 3 with 29 calls is the weak gas valve

Dryer Gas Valve

Gas dryers have two black cylindrical-shaped coils with plastic housing that are responsible for opening up the gas valve and allowing gas to come through. These coils, when energized, can become weak or stop working altogether over time. The symptoms of weak gas valve coils include a rattling or clunky sound when the burner is supposed to light, or the dryer stopping heating after about five minutes of use, resulting in damp and cool clothes. Also, if the gas valve coils are dead, then the flames on your gas dryer won’t light at all, and there will be no heat. To fix this issue, you will need to replace the gas valve coils.

Check The Video – Haw to repair Gas Valve. If you need to order a part, simply go to Amre SupplyReliable Parts.

Problem number 4 coming in with 26 calls is restricted venting

Blockage of the Dryer Vent
Blockage of the Dryer Vent

Restricted venting especially if you have a really long vent run meaning your vent pipe flexible or solid is very far I mean it’s like 30 or 40 feet if it goes across you know your whole basement your whole living room to get out the other side of the house a lot of times I see those plugged the most often, so restricted venting you really should get your dryer vent cleaned especially if you have a long one every couple of years, otherwise a lot of lint and debris that gets past the lint screen ends up in your vent pipe and with time that builds up and restricts the air flow and a lot of times a restricted vent will be accompanied by a trip thermal fuse as well, so if you’re replacing a thermal fuse which I went over as problem number one there’s a good chance that you’re having an issue with air flow and a lot of times that is caused by the vent having a lot of crap in it or the vent hood outside has plugged up about 50% of dryers are pretty easy to access so you can actually pull it out yourself and disconnect the vent from the back of the dryer a lot of times the most accumulation happens right in the back there you can take those tape off after your event and take your piping apart take a look at it there vacuuming it out or take a long crush and just brush it out but if your vent is really long or it’s hard to access or if it goes through ceilings and stuff then you will have to call a vent cleaning company to come out and clean your dryer vents. Check The Video – Haw to clean restricted vent. If you need to order a part, simply go to Amre SupplyReliable Parts.

Problem number 5 with 23 calls is a clogged or damaged lint screen

Dryer Lint Screen
Dryer Lint Screen

So the lint screen if it’s damaged a lot of times the frame around it the plastic frame is gonna be the one that’s all busted up or cracked or maybe the lint screen soft will have holes in it or some tears for some reason maybe a hair pin or something got through and if it’s clogged almost every time it’s clogged because of you know those fabric softener sheets that feel really waxy if people use a lot of those with time they tend to you know the wax comes off of them and they tend to plug up that lint screen in a wax, and that restricts the air flow and a lot of times this is a company buy damp clothes so when your dryer is done you open it up you take your clothes out they feel really hot yet they’re still damp they’re not fully dried out even though in the past in the same settings you know if you set it to 60 minutes all the time it used to drive just fine and now you’re noticing that the clothes are coming out damp maybe your lint screen is plugged up so you can either try to clean it up soak it and brush off all that wax or just replace that lint screen altogether. Check The Video – Haw Replace Lint Screen. If you need to order a part, simply go to Amre SupplyReliable Parts.

Next is number 6 what 20 calls and that is a bad dryer motor

Dryer Motor
Dryer Motor

So the motor that spins the drum sometimes that goes bad if it’s completely bad of course nothing will work at all and if you take it put your dryer and you were just trying to run it that motor will be really hot and other times that motor will just start to overheat before it completely fails so this one’s kind of interesting because it tends to be an intermittent problem, so I’ll come out to a dryer and the customer says it wasn’t spinning it wasn’t working at all and the very first thing I do when I go monk dryer regardless of what the customer tells me I always test it myself and see what it does first before I start taking the dryer apart and you know I turned the dryer on it turns on the burners light the drum is spinning everything’s working fine and the customer is all flustered they’re like well it wasn’t working like nothing was working at all it wasn’t spinning and a lot of times if I let the unit run for about 15-20 minutes and the motor will actually overheat in front of me and stop spinning in that case there’s really not much you can do except replace that dryer motor and of course if it’s not spinning at all you’re the only way to verify is with the meter so if the motor is getting power but it’s not spinning then it’s a bad dryer motor. Check The Video – Haw Replace Dryer Motor. If you need to order a part, simply go to Amre SupplyReliable Parts.

Number 7 with 18 calls is a bad timer so this is only the older dryers

Timer For the dryer
Timer For the dryer

Newer drivers will have a control board, but this timer is the thing that spins or advances as the dryer cycle continues and then it shuts off most frequently when, I see bat timers that’s because they stop advancing so for example if I set my dryer to 70 minutes, I come back in a half an hour and it’s still at 70 minutes and in three hours the dryer is still running that almost guarantees that I have a bad timer and they can behave differently sometimes the timer will not send power to the igniter so it’s not gonna light the burners or if you have an electric dryer maybe the timer is the one that’s not sending power to the element the heating elements and not turning it on so it can behave differently but most of the time when I see a bad timer it’s because the timer is not advancing and the fix for that is to simply replace the timer and just so you know if you don’t know this already the timer is actually pretty bulky it’s a lot bigger than this little knob right here usually it’s a big rectangle thing that is behind the knob so you have to take this front panel off or you just take the back off and you’ll see that timer and the timer is actually pretty easy to replace if you know what you’re doing I would highly recommend if you’re replacing a timer for the first time to actually go on YouTube and look up you know Maytag timer replacement or whatever brand you have and go step by step and follow what they’re doing even though the timer will likely just have one big electrical plug what can go wrong right it’s sometimes there’s just little nuances that you know if you don’t know what you’re doing you’ll be stuck doing this little job for two hours whereas if you opened up a video it probably only take you about 10 minutes. Check The Video – Haw Replace Dryer Timer. If you need to order a part, simply go to Amre SupplyReliable Parts.

Number 8 what 16 calls are a bad heating element.

Dryer Electric Heating Element
Heating Element for Electric Dryer

This applies only to electric dryers but the heating element just like anything else with time it does fail it goes out most, of the time the heating elements fail visibly, so if you take your dryer apart and you find the heating element you’re actually going to see one of those electrical coils the heating itself that heats up a lot of times it will be actually broken you’ll see a wire dangling or there will be some spot where it actually burnt out and you can visually verify that that heating element is bad even without using a meter, replacing a heating element is not too hard but if you’ve never done it before once again I would suggest following along a video step-by-step of how to do it that’ll make your life a lot easier. Check The Video – Haw Replace Dryer Heating Element. Order Dryer Heating Element 2 Company Amre SupplyReliable Parts.

Ironically the next problem is a bad igniter coming in a 9 place with 14 calls.

Dryer Heating Element Ignitor
Dryer Heating Element Ignitor

That only applies to gas dryers they have a hot surface igniter that glows really hot and that’s what lights the gas those igniters what time would just wear and tear as you keep using your dryer they do fail as well and almost every time those just like the heating element you will be able to visually verify you’ll see a little crack in that igniter or a burnt-out mark and then you know for sure that that igniter is bad but that being said there are times where you don’t see any cracks in it but it’s still failed in that case you pretty much the only way to verify it is to just try replacing it or if you have a meter to omit out and see if it’s bad or not. Check The Video – Haw Replace Dryer Igniter. Order Dryer Ignitor 2 Company Amre SupplyReliable Parts.

10 place with 13 calls is a bad cycling thermostat.

Drye Thermostat
Drye Thermostat

So the cycling thermostat is in both electric and gas dryers that’s the little thermostat that’s like a little I don’t even know how to describe it a little switch I’ll include a picture of it that controls the temperature inside off the dryer so the way the dryer works is it gets to about I don’t know 190, 200 at most degrees inside of the dryer the heat does it gets up to about 200 degrees let’s say then the cycling thermostat is the one responsible for turning off the heating element or the burner and the heat drops to about 120 then the cycling thermostat is the one responsible for turning the heat back on it goes back up and that it just the dryer just keeps doing that over and over and over and over again heats up cooled down heats up cools down heats up cools down and that’s the way the dryer works and the piece responsible for controlling those temperatures is that cycling thermostat so there’s a bad cycling thermostat the dryer may not work at all or the temperatures are gonna start running away either don’t get too low or they’re gonna get too high or a dryer will start doing weird thing like that so replacing the thermostat will most of the time take care of a problem like that. Check The Video – Haw replace Dryer Cycling Thermostat. Order Dryer Cycling Thermostat 2 Company Amre SupplyReliable Parts.
