Appliance Service Technician

Hello, this is John H. your friendly neighborhood technician and I am back to talk about more helpful information regarding your appliances.

Today we will talk about new appliances, versus refurbished appliances or used appliances as some may call them.

There are pros and cons with both selections.

New appliances are energy efficient, they’re stylish, they are good at what they do and they have many features to make your lives easier. If you look around you can see there are many different styles and types of appliances to choose from and they all have that new fresh smell. Furthermore, they come with a one-year manufacturer’s warranty, which may be useful as these days appliances aren’t built like they were in the past but they have also improved in many ways. So, if something happens to the appliance within the first year they cover a number of defects and you have peace of mind in some regard, so are they worth it, yes they are if you have the budget.

Okay now, let’s review Used Appliances Vs. Reconditioned Appliances.

There is nothing wrong with used appliances; they’ve been professionally checked and had any necessary repairs done, but you can tell they’re not quite as nice, not quite as fancy or as stylish as newer appliances.

Now some of the good points about refurbished appliances, are their parts are generally cheaper and still price-effective in getting the job done. For example, an old school Whirlpool washer with an agitator, which was proven to work for a number of years before Whirlpool converted to the new direct drive and clutches, but the old school parts are actually relatively easier to repair and cheaper, hence one of the reasons why you don’t get a warranty on these older appliances because it is not needed.

Some drawbacks about refurbished appliances is that they are obviously older models and thus you can run into issues with not being able to find parts of certain models, and this could drive up the cost of finding certain parts that are no longer made, but as I mentioned parts are also a lot cheaper in most models due to these parts not being as fancy and having all the gimmicks of the newer models. Additionally, with the newer models, there is no guarantee that these appliances will last any longer than the used ones these days and if you have to fix a used or a new appliance, I would rather go with the used appliance since you will already be paying a lot less so there is wiggle room left to add on the additional cost of repairs if needed later on, whereas a new appliance could cost you a thousand dollars to buy and than another few hundred every so often to repair.

From my experience of visiting many client homes, most clients would rather fix their 20-year-old appliances than buy a newer model because as the saying goes old is gold. These older models are simple appliances, that get the job done and the repairs they need are generally quick affordable fixes that will keep the appliance going for many more years.

If you’re looking for a new shiny appliance with many built-in features, your best bet is to buy a new appliance, if you really don’t care and you’re looking for a good replacement, think about buying a reconditioned appliance, you can find a good deal on older styles that will still give you plenty of uses and be both affordable and efficient.
